However, the strong spikes and accurate blocks, together with the first balls and settings of team se7en enabled them to pull away and gained the lead in the midst of the first set. Thus they took the first set down comfortably with a score of 25-17.

During the second set, there were a lot of rallies as both halls defended the spikes well. However, with less errors created by our own hall and terrific spiking from team se7en, we managed to take down the second set with a score of 25-19.

With team se7en leading with a score set of 2-0, team se7en girls just needed to win the next set to be the champion. On the other hand, hall two needed to win the next set in order to stay in the game. Hall two's determination to win the third set could be seen as they managed to catch up with team se7en till a score of 21-21. With hall two's morale up after catching up to team se7en, a time out was subsequently called by us. With guidance from Mr Chew, the girls managed to calm themselves down and went back into court to win the next 4 points. Thus, they took the third set down with a score of 25-21.

Once again, congratulations to team se7en volleyball girls for winning the gold medal!

-Wendy Tan

GOLD for hockey!!!

1st February 2008

At the end of a tight showdown with Hall 13, Team Seven emerged victorious in the finals of the IHG hocket tournament. A single late goal from Hichael separated the two sides, but it was enough to secure the championship for the lads.

Rain fell steadily on the pitch for the duration of the match, and Seven started the first half explosively, passing the puck to the wings after the starting whistle was blown. Both teams were evenly matched, playing a demanding game that involved swift counterattacks and stifling marking. Seven had the better chances of the half; the ball was hit wide after a scramble in front of Hall 13's goal from a free hit, and later it was saved off the line from another free hit. Seven's watertight defence was outstanding, dealing with opponents and dangerous set pieces quickly.

After a goalless first half, Seven began to play more adventurously in the chilly conditions as the lads chased after the ball with more hunger. While the defence remained as solid as before, cutting out Hall 13's play even as the latter continued to make forays into the attacking half, their efforts produced more chances. The puck was chipped just over the goal from a free hit and shortly after that, no one was able to connect on the end of a threatening forward pass which found space.

Late in the match, a pass from Firdaus from the edge of the 'D' eluded all except Hichael, who cooly put the puck past the goalkeeper for the deciding goal. Celebrations erupted among the supporters, but the match wasn't over just get. In the dying moments, Hall 13 sent in a dangerous pass from a corner, but they were denied an equaliser when it was saved off the line. When the final whistle blew, the cheers erupted for a second time, and the lads fell on their knees as they took in the scale of their achievement. Their triumph was well-deserved, for they played as consistently as they did throughout the tournaments.

Hall Seven 1, Hall Thirteen 0

-Nicholas Lim

so proud of our se7en volleyball guys

Our team se7en volleyball guys played against hall 3 in their semi finals on Thursday night. Our volleyball guys made us really proud of them by putting up a good fight with the defending champion team.

Without needing to familiarize with the new environment, the players from both teams were already on fire when they kicked off with the first set as both wanted to win the first set to have a good start. As a result, both teams were not willing to let down as after hall 3 scored, we would get it back and score again. Hence, throughout the set, the points from both teams were not separated by more than 2 points. However, just when we were approaching the match point of 25, our players were unable to perform as well as our opponent. As a result, hall 3 players quickly seized the advantage and ended the set with a score of 25-22.

We thought that our players would perform better for the second set as they were so close to winning the first set. However, our expectations were not met with as our guys lost their morale and handed the set over to hall 3 with a score of 25-16.

As we proceed to the third set of the game, I believed hall 3 players had actually let down their guard to a certain extent as they were already leading by 2-0. Thus, they made many mistakes themselves which caused their morale to drop significantly. As such, our players seized the opportunity to perform better and whack them back even harder and finally earned our first win with a score of 25-18.

With a significant boost in morale, our players challenged their opponent with more powerful attacks and blocking. Coupled with more mistakes made by hall 3 players themselves, we stood on par with hall 3 in no time when we won the fourth set with a score of 25-21.

With a draw of 2-2, a fifth set of 15 points need to be played. However, this time round, the experienced players of hall 3 realised the need to perform at the level they should be performing. Hence, it was a tough fight between the two teams again as both fought hard to win the deciding set. The points throughout the set were back to back again. Frankly, we had a good chance of winning when we actually had a lead of 12-10 when we were approaching the set point. However, our players’ attacks were not as fierce as our opponent at that critical moment. In comparison, the experienced players from hall 3 had an edge over us as their attacks became more powerful. As a result, hall 3 won the deciding set with a score of 15-12.

Despite losing to hall 3 this time round, I believe our volleyball guys had gained a precious and memorable experience as hall se7en supporters would remember them as our super team who had created a legend in the volleyball of IHG.

“To me, they are my champion team.” – Team se7en sports sec, Wei Xin

-Jinzhen

an early exit for our table tennis team

Our hall se7en table tennis team was up against the sixers during the semi finals round. It was definitely a commendable effort put in by our team despite losing 4-1 in the five matches.

Historically, hall six has always been known for their strength in sports. Table tennis is no exception, either. The sixers were undeniably strong in their attacks and showed no sign of relenting throughout the entire game. Their players’ superior experience coupled with IVP players overpowered our team. Nonetheless, our players were determined to put up a good fight and remained in top form at any one time.

The results for the matches are as followed:

Women’s singles: 3-0

Men’s singles: 3-0

Men’s doubles: 3-0 (we won!)

Women’s doubles: 3-1

Mixed doubles: 3-0

Even though our team players were unable to clinch a position in the finals, deep down in our hearts, we know they will always be our champions! Anxiety got the better of hall 9 as they created more errors of thier own compared to us in the first set. As a result, team se7en girls managed to take the first set with a score of 25-15.

During the second set, the girls were all warm up and ready. As such, their accurate blocks and spikes combined with their powerful service enabled them to take a huge lead. With hall 9 morale down, team se7en took this as an extra advantage and continued to perform their best and ended up winning with a score of 25-8.

In the third and final set, the girls started to lose a little of their focus as they created many service and spikes errors. This allowed hall 9 to take the lead initially. However, after a time out called, the girls manged to focus and concentrate before taking the last set down with a score of 25-18.

As such, the girls will play in the finals and will be fighting for the gold with defending champion -- hall 2. Having finished 4th in the qualifying heats, our relay girls had but one mission in mind: to better their placing. All week long, they were consumed by thoughts and ideas on how to improve their personal timing, and now was the time to show the rest of the world what they’ve got. Track events are probably one of the most unpredictable events in the Games, but our girls gave all they had and left everything else to the hands of fate. Eventually, even though they came short of what they deserved by finishing 5th overall, they did not fail to live up to the expectation of the event itself by providing sufficient entertainment value and great showmanship. At the end of the day, isn’t this what the Games is all about?

-Rebecca Lim

Squash team out

The squash team faced strong opponents-hall 16 on a tuesday evening at SRC, unknown that it will be the last time going there. There was high tension because the loser will be out of the game hence both teams regarded the match with high importance, praying for good fixtures. The fixture turned out great and there was a tough fight, ending 3-2. Team seven put their best feet forward but well it was not enough. But you know it was really tough luck and lack of experience. We are positive that history will not repeat. It was a good win for hall 16 as they had experienced players and perserverence. Despite losing, it was a game which ended well.
Squash has advanced a step further than before and we are all elated and have high hopes. The match has ended but not the spirit. The first match was a tough match against hall 6. They were defeated 4-1 but of course their hopes did not shatter. With more experience and exposure, the team went on to meet hall 13. The team, donned in white and blue, set out to play their game with a display of wild strokes, killer services and racket work. In the end they emerged victorious with a 5-0 win. Although elated, the team knew that complacency only leads to failure. They continued to strive hard and trained to prepare for the coming match which was crucial. It was essential to win as only then will they move on to the next round. Clueless who their next opponents are, they could only wait to see which of the halls won the qualifying match. It was a fight between hall 6 and hall 8. Hall 6 won in the very end (No doubt a tough competitor because they won us) after a grueling session, having everybody’s heart in their mouths. It was then decided that hall 7 was to face hall 8 in the qualifying match on a bright sunny Sunday morning. That day, the sky was bright and the weather was awesome, a good sign! They even changed the racket grip to a new red grip-more good luck! But of course these are only minor issues which led to the win. The players were the key to the win. So anyway, the fixture was good, the match was better and the players were the best. They fought and ran and cheered and finally won with a score of 4-1. After this match, the players are greatly encouraged and will continue to put their best feet forward for their upcoming match on the 15th of January against hall 16.

-Grace Lim

NETBALLERS TO MEET HALL 6 IN A CLASH OF THE TITANS

Hall 7 netballers showed determination and grit to earn a victory against their rivals Hall 3 in an equally contested match.

With supporters cheering by their side, they kept the mood up with a final score of 28-8 in a fast-paced game of telepathic passes and interceptions.

Charmain, who stood a head taller than her defenders, was on a roll in the 1st quarter, converting almost all of her scoring chances into goals. But she was prevented from scoring in the following quarters because the experienced former netballers from Hall 3 consistently sandwiched her, thus preventing her from moving into space.

At times, spectators could see Charmain’s frustration, especially when the umpire dubiously called her for a contact foul on Hall 3’s defenders. But she held onto her nerves, and did not disappoint Hall 7’s boisterous supporters.

Zhi Yen, who usually plays the position of Wing-Attack or Centre, played the position of Goal-Attack for three quarters of the game. She adapted well to her position to help put the pressure off Charmain.

Hall 7’s defence did equally well to hold Hall 3’s attackers to score just 8 goals. Special mention goes to Shiqi, an Under-21 netball player, as she was dubbed “the Flying woman” during the game by one of the spectators. Her timely interceptions helped to increase Hall 7’s turnover rate and scoring chances.

When asked how the team fared, Jean, one of the more experienced members in the team, said, “I think we played overall. I could even feel the support from Hall 7, and I’m glad that even our reserves were there to experience the match.”

But can Hall 7’s loopholes be exploited by Hall 6 in the finals? Their tendency to rush through the game in the first quarter might prove to be their weakness against Hall 6, who won Hall 11 in the other semi-final match. Furthermore, they might need to work on their passes to overcome the fast-paced game Hall 6 favours.

All of us are waiting in anticipation for the big finals.

-Liyana Low

volleyball girls to SFs!

Team Se7en volleyball girls swiftly beat hall 8 today in the quarter finals with a score of 4-25 and 6-25 for both sets and safely secured a place in the semi finals. The attackers were in top form, with Zhiyen partnering Hall 7’s resident goal-shooter Charmain as the goal attack. The midfielders comprising Jean in her usual position as center and Shilin as wing attack did extremely well to feed perfect lobs for the shooters.

The defence held up very strongly as well to hold Hall 15 to only 2 goals. The trio of Sadaf, Janice (goal defence) and Viona (goal keeper) worked together to prevent any attacking chances from Hall 15.

Coming back from her attachment was Sadaf, a Year 3 Business student, playing in the position of wing defence. She showed why she was still in the first team with a slew of timely interceptions to Hall 15’s attackers.

Rowena, the goal-shooter who replaced Charmain after the 3rd quarter, managed to put in a few accurate shots as well despite Hall 15’s goal keeper being a head taller than her.

Leslie, an alumnus of Hall 7, could be heard shouting in reference to Rowena’s shooting skills, “Not as tall, but still as accurate!”

But the next match in the semi-final against Hall 3 would not be as easy as the quarter-final match. Everyone was buzzing with the kind of intense energy, excitement and anticipation that are never found in lecture theatres as we waited impatiently for the commencement of the day’s track events – the 4x100m and 4x400m qualifying heats. Each hall was allocated and confined to a designated area for which to pursue the mundane activities of containing our energy by sitting, relaxing and cheering on our hall mates. But that did not prevent our competitive spirits from spilling over these boundaries, intermingling and permeating the atmosphere of the stadium.

The day started off with the 4x100m relay events, followed by the 4x400m events. Witnessing the determination embodied and incarnated in the movements and energy of the athletes as they strove to outrun each other was a rare sighting. There was even a singular fierceness in the manner in which the runners received the baton and scrambled away to the finishing line.

The beauty of these events, however, lies in the way each member combined their strengths to produce a complete effort. The crowd was kept gripping to their invisible seats as each team’s superiority and ranking were continually destabilised and re-established right to the finish line.
Of course, the supporters’ (who are as much a part of the team as the runners are!) also made great contributions with their motivational techniques. Some were seen cheering to a beat carved out with the innovative aid of plastic bottles, while others stuck to the old-fashioned method of shouting their lungs hoarse. Indeed, at times, it was unclear whether we were there for a cheering or running competition!

Congratulations to our girls who thoroughly deserve their place in the finals of both events, even incurring minor pulls in the process. Unfortunately, our boys finished 9th in both events, thus narrowly missing out a chance to join our girls in the finals. But such is the nature of competition, and hall seven is incredibly proud of the vigorous displays by our boys and we are confident that they will be amongst the best this time next year. For now, we hope to see more of you turning up to support our girls in the finals! Even though Hall 10 proved to be a tough nut to crack, the se7en guys never once gave up. Even though we eventually bowed out of the competition with a score of 53-29, at least we came and we fought. It's not the end that matters, but the process.

The game started brightly for hall 7 as hall 10 played a slow game while our guys played with a face pace. In the opening minutes, Hall 7 led the game with 5 points. However, Hall 10 began to adapt to our speed of play and increase their pace too. With their fast pace and accurate shooting, there was no stopping the hall 10 players. This forced our players into committing various necessary fouls. However, hall 10 players were all able to convert the chances due to their pinpoint accurate shooting.

Soon, hall 10 not only caught up with us but slowly began to widen the gap. The different in quality between both sets of players were glaring and se7en basketball team was playing without one of the strongest players. Hall 10 managed to score a lot of points via airballs which was almost impossible to defend against. The score after 2 quarters stood at 25-16 in Hall 10's favour.

Even after many rounds of regrouping and restrategising, Hall 7 could not master enough shots to catch up with the game. No matter what is it, we're sure the team will be back next season - only stronger.

-Toh Ling Hui

basketball females out

The basketball girls faced hall one today in the quarter finals. The winner of this game will advance to the semi finals. Unfortunately for hall seven, the girls lost to hall one after an intensive match played this evening.

The match started neck to neck as both halls defended very well. As such, the score was 3-4 with hall one leading by only a point. As both teams were unable to score, a first time out was called to restrategize. However, due to anxiety, hall seven players started making wrong passes which put hall one players at an advantage. As such, hall one players managed to pull away and ended with a score of 3-8 in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, hall one players managed to further the lead with a score of 5-14. However, despite the lead in the first half, hall seven players did not give up and pressed on in the game. Many good passes were made and our hall players defended very well. Despite it all, lady luck didn't seem to be on our side as many attempted shots failed to get into the basket. However with Taijie assisting the girls team, the players managed to fight back strongly and ended up with a score of 11-18 in the third quarter.

Even at the very last quarter when hall seven was behind by 9 points, the girls team never gave up. They were determined to fight back. 5 minutes before the end of the game, hall seven girls managed to catch up with a score of 15-18. Their attacks and defences were brilliant and accurate and this started to put pressure on hall one players. However, a time out was soon called by hall one and with their own restrategizing, they managed to extend the lead further and ended the game with a score of 15-21.

Despite losing in the quarter finals, the determination and perseverance of hall seven basketball girls is commendable. It was definitely a good game played!

-Wendy Tan

softball males out

Only one obstacle stood between Hall 7 and the softball quarterfinals – Hall 5. Both teams had met previously in this round of the competition, with the latter hall coming out victorious. Although Seven were unable to avenge the defeat this time around, the team put up a much improved display, taking the match to 5 innings before losing 16-20.

Seven fielded first in the bright but windy conditions. In the first inning both teams scored 7 runs apiece, albeit in very different manners. Hall 5’s players were took several walks through cautious batting, while Seven’s batters drove the ball deep into the outfield to send teammates home.

The second inning saw only one run, which was scored Seven, giving them a narrow lead going into the last ordinary inning. Hall 5 retook the lead in their batting half of the third inning through 2 runs, only for Sam to level the score at 9-all before 3 of Seven’s players were downed.

Incredibly, the score was not settled in fourth inning. Seven switched pitchers in the middle of their fielding half but were unable to stop Hall 5 from getting 7 runs before the switchover. However they equalised through some strong batting of their own in the return half.

With everything to play for in the final inning, each half started with a runner at second base and the number of players that needed to be put out was reduced to two. Hall 5 eked out a 4-run lead before their turn was ended. Seven were unable to score any runs to overturn or reduce the deficit. It turned out not to be their day in the end, but the team exit the competition knowing they put up a very strong fight against a familiar opponent and turned the encounter into a thriller.

Final score: Hall Seven 16, Hall Five 20 (after 5 innings)

-Nicholas Lim

darts team, well done!

Overview of the results

Qualifying rounds

Day 1
Hall 7 VS Hall 4 3:2 Won
Hall 7 VS Hall 1 3:2 Won
Hall 7 VS Hall 6 3:2 Won
Hall 7 VS Hall 8 4:1 Won

Day 2
Hall 7 VS Hall 12 2:3 Lost
Hall 7 VS Hall 10 2:3 Lost
Hall 7 VS Hall 15 4:1 Won

Semi Final
Hall 7 VS Hall 3 2:3 Lost

Yes! Hall 7 darts team made it to the semi finals. It was a close fight between us and Hall 10. We are tie with Hall 10 for the number of games, sets and boards won. However, when it comes to the number of points, we won them by 500. Making into the semi finals is really something to be proud of considering the fact that this year’s team is a relatively young one. Among the five main players, three of them are year one students without any prior experience in darts.

Our opponent for the semi final was Hall 3, last year’s champion for darts. It really took us lots of courage to play against them. Even though we didn’t beat them and get into the finals, we still won two out of five games.

Another point to note is that for the first two qualifying rounds, we managed to secure three games respectively and won despite the absence of the star player.

Keep up the good job Hall 7 darts team!

-Li Jun, Darts manager

softball females to finals!

Today, team se7en softball female played their quarters match against hall 9. Being top in the group in the preliminary rounds, team se7en would be facing a supposedly weaker team. However, hall 9 was much stronger than we had expected.

During the first round of fielding, our girls managed to hold them down with only four runs. When our girls were up to bat, they performed very well, especially Karen and Swee Ching who gave really powerful hits. As a result, we managed to reach the maximum of seven runs before changing to field again.

When it was our turn to field again, our players continued to perform well which only allowed our opponent to have another three more runs. However, when it was our turn to bat again, we lost our consistency and did not have any runs after the round of batting. Thus, at that point of time, the score was 7-7. From then onwards, it was really a tough fight between the two halls which caused the score to remain unchanged after another round of fielding and batting. Hence, when the time was up, it was a draw between the two halls. Thus, extra time was given and we were out to field first.

We continued to hold them down and only manage to give them another run. Before we started to bat for the last round, the score was 8-7 and we needed another two more runs to win the game. When we started to bat, the situation was not really favourable to us because two of our players had been strike out. When we thought we were going to lose the game, one of our players gave a good hit which managed to bring two of our players safely back home. As a result, we won with a score of 9-8! It was really a close fight, good job girls! And we would be playing in the semi-finals against hall six! Imran provided the solitary goal in the thriller, which Se7en had the slightest of edges in, making up for the girls' loss earlier in the evening.

The first half started off brightly, with both teams charging at each other fast whenever they gain possession of the puck. Se7en had the better chances though - the puck hit the roof of the net from a short corner, only for the goal to be disallowed for a technicality. Not long after though, Imran got hold of the puck from a long corner and fired it beyond the keeper to roars of delight from the supporters. Much of the rest of the period was played with Hall 7's attacking half of the pitch; one of their corners was deflected wide while another just missed the target from an improbable angle.

The end-to-end action continued after the break, and Hall 3 came out with guns blazing. Although they put up a much harder fight, their attacks and counterattacks were quickly ended by Se7en's backline. The latter created chances of their own but were unable to convert them, as nobody was able to get on the end of a couple of deft passes. They were dealt a blow however, when Hi Chael was banished to the sidelines for a rash tackle. With a numerical advantage and little time left on the clock, Hall 3 sent long passes into attack in search of an equaliser that they needed to take the match into a penalty shootout. They came close, shooting wide of the goal near the end. Se7en held on to the lead until the final whistle though, and booked their place in next Thursday's finals.

Final score: Hall Seven 1, Hall Three 0

-Nicholas Lim

polo guys out with heads held high

Water polo guys after the quarter finals

Today, the se7en water polo team went out knowing that a victory would literally prove that they are the team of the season and will surely go on to win the championship. However, it was easier said than done and the task proved a tad too impossible.

Having played hall 6 before in a friendly game and losing by a margin of 19-8, the se7en polo team knew just how strong their opponent was. Missing one of their key player, Shaun Lee, the team still set out hoping to clinch a victory. Though eventually, se7en polo team fell short and lost the game 8-0.

Hall 6 started and ended the game strongly. Both their attack and defence can said to be flawless. Their strikes were strong and powerful which left our keeper with nothing much to do. Se7en tried attacking numerous times to no avail and Sam looked the closest to scoring. Unfortunately, the ball was either intercepted by their tight defense or caught by their keeper. The closest we came to scoring was through Chun, however, the shot only managed to hit the woodwork.

Se7en's hope of scoring a consolation goal was banished as the whistle was blew, signifying our early exit in the competition. But this is not to say the players had not tried their best and we'd like to extend our undying support to the players for their amazing display of true fighting spirit.

It's game on for the next IH season!

-Toh Ling Hui

basketball males into the QFs!

Concentrating on putting in the free throw

Se7en basketball males have made it to the QFs with the score of 38-26 against Hall 12.

In the do or die game, se7en had a strangely quiet start to the game which left the supporters worrying if they lack readiness or beliefs. Hall 12 started brilliantly, scoring once and again via an air ball, leading us by a margin of 5. However, it was a sudden wake up call for the se7en players and they pull up their socks and scored 4 points, all via penalities.

And that was when the onslaught started. Hall 7 just kept on attacking and scoring and 12 never seem close to catching up and by the end of the first two quarters, hall 7 was leading 21-12.

Hall 12 came back stronger after the break, having regroup and restrategise, they started to catch up with us. With the game being played a long time after the restart, se7en were only able to up their score by 1 due to several missed chances. Hall 12 started to capitalise on our mistakes and kept getting points via air balls. Only a sterling performance from the opposing goalkeeper kept the margin down in a match where the victors spent much of the time attacking.

Hall 7 started creating chances within 2 minutes, but the hit from a short corner was stopped. Deft passing between their players on various parts of the pitch ensured that they held possession. The first goal came from another short corner, when Najip drove the puck past the 'keeper after being played on. Seven continued to dominate play until the break, but created few chances from open play - a powerful hit from inside the 'D' though did not find the back of the goal thanks to the Five's custodian.

In the second half, Hall 7 quickly regained possession from their opponents from the whistle and continued their forays into the attacking half. Hall 5 put up a stronger challenge but their counterattacks were frequently put out by Seven's players. The second goal came in the middle of the period from Firdaus's fierce shot from another short corner, and that provided welcome breathing space. The Hall 5 'keeper was called into action once more after that from another set-piece, and must have envied his opposite number who did not have any attempts to deal with.

The game ended in good spirits, and tomorrow, Hall 7 face a physical Hall 3 side, which put away Hall 10 1-0 on penalties after a goalless draw, for a spot in the finals.

Final score: Hall Seven 2, Hall Five 0

-Nicholas Lim

Rugby team into QFs!

Today was a good day for Hall 7 as our rugby team qualified for the quarters with relative ease.

The first preliminary round saw se7en winning via a walk-over against hall 14 as they did not have enough players.

For the second qualifying game, we were facing hall 3 whose players were all bigger and stronger than hall 7's players. However, there was only determination and not fear in the eyes of our rugby guys.

The game was truly played in a rough fashion ans se7en came so close to scoring through Gabriel's and Joel's brilliant runs. The tackles were flying fast and furious, however, the game ended in a stalemate and it was time for sudden death. Hall 7 made three substitutions which unsettled the team a little and cause a lapse in concentration which eventually saw hall 3 scoring as their player burst off in a brilliant run to the touchline.

However, the game was played in good spirit and both team qualified for the quaters as the other two halls in the group stages did not manage to field any team.

-Toh Ling Hui

basketball female into QFs!

Our girls fighting for Hall 7

Today was the decisive match between hall 2 and hall 7 basketball girls as to which team will qualify for the quarters. The game was to be played at 0900 hours and for many hall residents, it's certainly disruptive to wake up at such an unearthly time. But to every one's surprise, a hort of supporters turned up for the game and their undying cheers and support definitely intimidated the opposing support team and left them aghast at the results as se7en basketball girls won the game 29-28.

Having already won hall 2 basketbll girls in the first preliminary game, there was no doubt at all in our players' mind that they will qualify for the quarters. Eventually, it was this belief that brought them through. The game started with se7en girls knowing that they have to score early, capitalise on every opportunity, minimise any errors and mark 2 of hall 2 star players.

Our girls played with lightning speed in the first half, trying to tire out the opponents and Cheryl's performance and ability to evade the opposing defense, saw her score many goals to eventually allow us to gain a comfortable lead by first hall, a margin of 21-12. However, already committing three fouls, Cheryl had to be substituted and our veteran player, Jean got a chance to show what she's capable of as she singlehandedly closed done on Hall 2's Cheryl who's also their star player.

Even though the team deployed man-marking tactic to limit two of hall 2 star players' movement, the occasional laspse in concentration saw se7en committing many fouls in a bid to stop her from scoring. Soon, the score was 29-28 in hall 7 favour and the coach called for time-out to drill into the players' mind that they should defend tightly and strictly not to commit any fouls. In the last 20 seconds, the se7en supporters were breaking out in cold sweat as hall 2 was in possession and looked so close to scoring which would have sent them into the quarters. However, the referee soon blew the whistle and both the team and the supporters broke out in a chorus of cheers as we savour sweet victory against a bitter rival.

Today, we witness a team effort by the se7en basketball girls and there was no single player bigger or brighter than the team and we're hugely proud of them. Here's wishing them luck to go all the way!

-Toh Ling Hui

Softball males near to QFs!

Linus getting ready to hit a homerun

After a disappointing loss to Hall 5 in their earlier softball match, Hall 7 needed to win this tie in order to have a chance of progressing. The intensified training that followed paid off with a near-perfect rout of Hall 14.

Hall 7's players batted first, and in the first inning, the team scored 7 runs in their offensive half. Excellent batting enabled player after player to home runs - only 2 were elminated. In the return half, Hall 14 were unable to score any runs.

It was more of the same in the second inning, only this time, none of Hall 7's players were put out and they extended their lead by another 7 runs. Some tricky pitching by Meng Heng in the second half ensured that all of the opponents players were struck out.

In the final inning, Hall 14 switched pitchers in an attempt to narrow the scoreline. The move backfired however, as the new pitcher played several successive poor balls and allowed Hall 7's players to walk. The latter completed another perfect half without any eliminations. Hall 14 sportingly played their batting half, even though their players could not improve their tally.

Even though Hall 7 comprehensively outshown Hall 14 by 21 runs to none in the end, the match was played in good spirits. Hall 7 will face Hall 5 once again in the next match, with an eye on progressing to the next round and vindicating their earlier defeat to the same opponents.

Final score: Hall Seven 21, Hall Fourteen 0

-Nicholas Lim

Game Day 27/12/2007

Defending the ball

Kicking the ball over to the opponents

Today the sun shone brightly as team se7en set out on another journey to conquer more victories. However, the results showed another story as we only won one out of three competitive matches - that is, Water Polo.

The day started with the se7en volleyball males playing a tough match against hall 3. This was a match in which the guys have been training hard for. Our opponent underestimated our ability as the usual affair between both teams always see hall 3 winning the first two sets. However, the se7en volleyball males gave them a tough fight and unsettled our opponent. Despite losing the game 2-1, the last and deciding set was filled with extreme excitement as se7en came to level hall 3 at numerous occasions. Eventually, Hall 3 won with the score reading 25-21. However, all is not lost and if se7en volleyball males put up the same fighting spirit, they will be sure to make it to the QFs and we shall await their good news.

The second match was the sepak takraw match against hall 11. Hall 11 started very strongly and controlled most of the game. Our players were forced to make mistakes such as poor services and out-balls in the first regu. However, our players played very well in the second regu with excellent services and forced hall 11 to make mistakes. The game was always on par until the eleventh minute when hall 11 started to rid of their mistakes and won the second regu with a score of 21-18.

The day ended with our se7en polo guys pitting their skills against Hall 8. Dexter, our goalkeeper, commented before the match that he would like to keep a clean sheet and true to his words, hall 7 won the game with a stunning score of 12-0 as Dexter made a total of three saves to guarantee himself and the team a clean sheet. It was perfect play by the team as the entire team attacked and defended as one. Hall 8 were never close to scoring as our defense closed them down and pressured them into giving away the ball. Sam and Qing Yao were the stars of the days as both of them amassed a total of 7 goals while Chun did brilliantly swimming from one end to the other to score a goal. This emphatic performance has sent the se7en water polo team straight into the QFs and expectations are running high but we're sure the team will be able to deliver the goods.

Whether you're in or you're out,
we're still Team Se7en.
and we are one. (men singles, women singles, men doubles, women doubles and mixed doubles) For the men singles, it was an exciting match as both players' skills were on par. It was a very tight match as both players hit 6-6. A tie breaker match was eventually played to decide the winner. However during the last set, more errors were created by our own hall and hall 16 managed to have a strong lead and the men singles was eventually taken by hall 16. However, tables turned in the second set as hall six came back into the game fiercely by taking a large lead of 8-0 through their service. With many mistakes made by team se7en in the beginning, a time out was soon called. The girls, together with their coach, tried to re-strategize their attacks and defences and tried to recover back quickly by making less uncalled mistakes of their own. Although the girls tried catching up in the second set, it was a little too late and set two was dominated by hall six with a score of 20-25. As the next set will decide the eventual winner, Se7en girls quickly regained their calm and steady composure. They attacked and defended well and had the upperhand throughout the entire set and finally won the final set with a score of 25-8. Team se7en won hall six girls with a score of 2-1.

They will face hall one next.

-Wendy Tan

softball girls to QFs

The girls get ready for the big match

On Friday noon, team se7en softball female played their second match against hall 6. It was a deciding match for the winning hall to get into the quarter finals straight without playing the third match. Hence, in order to enjoy the benefits of winning the match, team se7en softballers put up their best performance and fought it all out with hall 6 players. Initially, hall 6 was in the lead by a score of 5-0 when they started off with batting. When it was our turn to bat, we fought back aggressively, thus pulling the score to 5-5 before we changed to field again. During our second round of fielding, our players performed very well to hold the opponents down. As a result, hall 6 managed to score only 2 runs before the change over. When it was our turn to bat again, our players did exceptionally well with their strong and powerful hits which allowed us to have a total of 7 runs! When it was our turn to field again, the score was 13-7. Thus, if we managed to hold them down of less than 6 runs, we would win the game without the need to bat again. And with much perseverance, we managed to hold them down with only 4 more runs. As a result, we won with a score of 13-11! That is the number that indicates Hall 7’s winning margin over Hall 12. The Hall 7 netballers maintained their winning ways despite missing main players such as Siqi and Yimin, both overseas, and Yizhen, who was injured in the previous match against Hall 3.

The first two quarters saw Hall 7 put in a total of 24 goals. Goal attack Zhi Yen, who played netball in junior college, did exceptionally well with her accurate long lobs to Charmain, who was at least a head taller than her defenders.

Credit should also go Hall 7’s defenders as they held Hall 12’s attackers to only 2 goals for the entire game. Goal-keeper, Viona, was alert for every rebound and did well to bring the ball down midfield for the feeders to pass to Charmain.

The third quarter also saw Jean, more affectionately known as “Mama Jean” within the team, switch from centre to goal defence; hence, contributing to Hall 12’s limited attacking chances.
Hall 7 netballers look to be in tip-top condition to advance to the semi-finals. With breadth and depth in the team, they appear to be one of the hot favourites to book a place in the finals.

Final score: 46-2

-Liyana Low

Hockey (F) 2nd qualifying match

Anisa tries a shot at goal
After a blistering start to the se7en Hockey females first qualifying game, our hockey girls were even more determined to win the second match against Hall 4. The girls played for the first time under bright sunlight.

Both halls started with equal pace and hunger for victory. Hall 4 didn't master up their linkup play properly and most shots and passes were being intercepted by the se7en's defence. On the other side of the pitch, se7en failed to convert their chances and all they could master was a string of wayward and missed shots. The game ended in a stalemate as both teams run out with a score of 0-0.

Soon, it was time for penalities. Hall 4 was up first and their star player, no. 10 scored the first shot. Both our penality takers, Aneesa and Sheeyin scored their penalities while Za, our goalkeeper displayed tremendous skills and willpower to block two shots from Hall 4.

Victory was thus granted to the se7en's hockey girls team!

-Ling Hui

se7en water polo team

The se7en water polo team faced their arch namesis, Hall 2 in their second preliminary round. Knowing the strength of the Hall 2 water polo team, the se7en polo team knew victory will have to be fought hard for. Recalling one of their strongest senior player, Shaun, the se7en polo team still succumbed to defeat as the Hall 2 polo team proved to be too strong an opponent.

The game started under bright sunshine as both team warmed up to the rousing cheers by the stands. Hall 2 started as the stronger side, however, their failure to convert some of the chances meant that our team was about to catch up with them. By half-time, the score was 3-3.

However, both team restrategised and Hall 2 came back with a vengence. Hall 2's failures to convert and mistakes were hound at by their fellow team mates. They came back quickly to score 2 goals within the starting few minutes of the second half. Se7en polo team left gaps at the back while trying to catch the game by scoring another 2. Unfortunately, this allowed Hall 2 to make use of the penetrateable defense to score another 2. Finally, the steam of se7en polo team was left running low and the game ended with a score of 7-5, in Hall 2's favour.

-Ling Hui

defeat will not drain us

Today's second preliminary basketball match between Hall 7 and Hall 2 was one dripping with excitement, cheers and a few heart-stopping moments. Both teams can be said to be of equal calibre as they sought to pit their skills and strategies against each other. It was truly a clash of the titans and the game was fought right down to the wire before Hall 2 claimed their victory.

Hall 7 started the game as underdogs as we faced defending champion, Hall 2. We know victory was not going to be easy, thus, we have to capitalise on Hall 2's mistakes and to bring the game to them instead of sitting back and defending. The game started in which both teams levelled each other and each hall took alternate turns at leading the game. Both halls fought relentlessly and things were starting to look ugly as fouls flew here and there. However, players from both side managed to keep their cool and not destroy the game.

Hall 7 was only trailing by 4 points by the end of the third quarter and there were many time outs as Hall 7 tried to re-strategise. However, the defending champions proved to be too strong and our players were drained out which allowed Hall 2 to widen their lead by 8 points with 2 minutes more to go.

Eventually, Hall 7 had to go down in defeat as the game ended 43-30. However, both sets of players display great gamemanship and we still have a chance to go to quater finals, if we win the next game against Hall 12.

GO TEAM SE7EN BASKETBALL GUYS! On paper, hall se7en softball girls seem to have an edge over hall 13 as our team comprised of mainly experienced seniors whereas for hall 13, their players are all new to the game. As a result, we won easily with a score of 8-0 after a few rounds of batting. Every player in our team performed rather well and especially our pitcher who tried her best to maintain her consistency to strike out a few of the players from hall 13. Overall, it is a good and fair play by team se7en softball female team. Do look out for our very own team se7en softball female team as it may be one of the teams that will help to bring glory back for hall se7en!

-Jinzhen

news from carom players

After a grueling week of intensive training, our players were in all gears and they are all very excited about the opening of the competition. There are some new blood injected into our carom team this year and all look forward to seeing the new generation of players bloom under the care of our veteran captain, Wilson.

Around in the mid noon, our first round of competition began.

We were pitted against hall 12 in the first round. Even though nerves were tense for many of the players, we still managed to breeze through the first round with much ease. Out of 5 boards, we won 4 of them.

In the second round, we met hall 3, who was last year’s champion hall for carom. As expected, our opponents proved to be a hard nut and showed us the quality of the reigning champions. Despite that, our players displayed great fighting spirit and resilience to put up a worthy challenge against them. I would say that both sides have equal opportunities to snatch the game but in the end, the better team won. Hall 3 emerges as the victors.

In the remaining 2 rounds of the day, we met hall 14 and hall 1 respectively. In the third round against hall 14, our players managed to perform at their highest level and clinched a commanding victory over our opponents where we did not lose a single board at all.

It’s a pity that our carom team did not end the match day with a well-deserved victory. In the final round, we lost to our close rival, hall 1 by a small margin. It was a tough fight and our carom team should have deserved more than that. I could only say lady luck chose to turn against us at the wrong timing.

I believe that our players have all done their best and brought honor to hall 7. Let’s look forward to a better day! The game was over within 15 minutes as our players breezed past their opponents with 11-2, 11-1 and 11-3 win.

In the mixed doubles match, it was evident that our opponents were bent on recovering back their previous loss. However, they made a few mistakes and our players were able to grasp the opportunities to gain a few points lead in the match. There were a couple of tough shots, but our players were quick to react and kept their cool throughout the game, ending the match with 11-4, 11-8 and 11-4 win.

The men’s singles match was definitely the “noisiest” game of all, where our team player literally shouts words of encouragement to boost his confidence and attempt to intimidate our IVP player opponent, to be only matched and retaliated with loud cheers from the opponent’s supporters. It was indeed a hilarious yet tense scene as both sides fought to pull the lead away from one another. Still, we were unable to win the war as our player was soon exhausted and had to settle for a 12-10, 6-11, 6-11 and 4-11 loss for the third match.

Nonetheless, our confidence was regained during the women’s singles match, where our player remained focused and composed throughout the game, which was the main factor leading to our victory for this preliminary round. The opponent was good, but we are even better, even though both sides seemed to be evenly matched. Team se7en supporters’ hearts skipped a few beats as the opponent return a few fast shots, but our player stayed firm, ending the game with 11-9, 11-8, 4-11 and 12-10 win.

In the final match of men’s doubles, our players were met with equally strong competition from the opponent’s side. We managed to keep up with the pace of our rival team but there were a number of over-hit returns from our side, resulting in 11-7, 6-11, 9-11 and 10-12 loss.
Still, having won 3 out of the 5 matches, team se7en table tennis team was able to enter the quarter finals round.

Let us all await their next good news!

-Tee B.J.

Hockey (M) to QFs

Encouragement and cheers can be heard as team se7en’s male hockey players were getting ready for their match against hall 15.

It was all excitement and anticipation as both teams went all out to bring victory for their respective halls. After a series of short smooth passes, team se7en supporters went wild when our players strike our opening first goal by Lik Sin in barely 4 minutes of the game. The hockey court was once again filled with shouts of support when Hi Chael brought team se7en a step closer to quarter finals by scoring the second goal during the ninth minute. The team’s confidence grew even more as Hi Chael scored the next goal in succession when the previous thrill has yet to die down, pulling the lead away from our opponent with a score of 3-0 in the first half of the match.

Although victory was clearly in sight, our players did not relent, and in last than one minute after the second half of the match, Najib did his team proud by intercepting the opponent’s goalkeeper and scoring a reverse-hit goal, putting the scores to 4-0.

Our players played with determination and presented superb teamwork, but were unable to pull the score margin further due to a few near misses and wasted opportunities. Our opponent also attempted to score several times, but to no avail due to the excellent saves made by our goalkeeper, Fahmi. Needless to say, the final whistle blew in a matter of seconds, and we were able to advance to the quarter finals!

Way to go, team se7en!

-Tee B.J.

Softball (M) 1st qualifying game

In softball, Hall 7 lost their first qualifying game against Hall 5 by a score of 8 runs to 2. The defeat left the team in need of winning their next two matches in order to advance to the next round.

Both teams and their supporters appeared upbeat in spite of the muddy field which greeted them on a Sunday afternoon. The first inning began with Hall 7 fielding first, giving them a theoretical advantage. That did not faze Hall 5 as they managed to eke out a 3-0 lead in the top half, taking advantage of some nervous fielding and batting, before Hall 7 rallied back with 2 runs of their own. The second inning was an even tighter affair, with neither team scoring any runs as players were forced and struck out with regularity, although Hall 7 produced some improved fielding.

There was still everything to play for in the third inning, but in spite of their best efforts, including an excellent flyout, Hall 7 were unable to prevent Hall 5 from scoring another 5 runs through a series of walks. Weak batting in their bottom half sealed the match, as Hall 7 could not find an answer. The inability to string a series of hits ensured that their batters who advanced were quickly put out of play and did not score any runs before the end of the game.

Final score: Hall Five 8, Hall Seven 2

-Nicholas Lim

se7en Takraw 2nd qualifying game

Cheers to Team Se7en's Takraw guys for putting in their best effort in the second qualifying game which was suddenly being pushed forward from Sunday to Friday. However, our opponent later caught up with an 8-11 and 7-11 scores respectively for the next two consecutive sets, and the first hint of pressure and tension hung in the air. Nonetheless, things began looking better as our team persevered on with a score of 11-8 in the fourth set, and finishing off nicely with 11-3 in the final set, giving us the first taste of confidence and victory.

An even more exciting match awaits us in the women’s singles match, as our opponent was leading in the first two sets with 4-11 and 7-11 scores. The third and fourth sets were the turning point for team se7en as both sides was each leading the scores by a near margin alternatively, with our team eventually emerging with 13-11 and 11-7 scores. Sadly, luck was not on our side as the opponent ultimately calls the shots in the last set with a 6-11 win.

In contrast to the women’s singles battle, the extremely good rapport and teamwork in our men’s doubles team enabled us to take the lead again with a straightforward 11-5, 12-10, and 11-1 win, finishing their match in barely 15 minutes and bringing us a step closer to victory.

Similarly, in the women’s doubles match, our team hardly broke a sweat as the crowd cheered them on, bringing team se7en a level higher into the next qualifying round with 11-3, 11-6, 9-11, and 11-5 win.

The last match to be played was the mixed doubles’ match despite the previous triumphing of hall se7en as the winner in this preliminary round. This match proved to be the highlight of the day as both teams were determined to test their skills. The tension in the air became more intense as our opponents came down hard on us. Their efforts and tactics to intimidate our players were fruitless as our team played with conviction and perseverance. It was a well-fought match despite us losing with 7-11, 7-11, 12-10, and 3-11 scores.

All in all, the day ended well as we still emerged victorious. Although hall 6 is one of the hot favourites with a few IVP badminton players, our players are equally good with quite a number of very experienced players. For the girls’ doubles, we won the set with a strong fight as we sent our best girls with their good individual skills coupled with good coordination among partners. This clearly shows the girl power of hall se7en! For guys’ doubles, we won the set effortlessly due to a walkover. But sad to say, for both the guy and girl singles, we lost both the sets after putting up a good fight as hall 6 sent their IVP players for the singles which had a clear advantage over us. Lastly, for the mixed doubles, hall 6 had an edge over us again as they sent another IVP player to compete with our players. After a close fight, we lost to them by a few points. As a result, hall se7en lost the match with a score of 2-3. Nonetheless, our badminton team still has a great potential to beat many other halls. Hence, let’s watch out for their better performance in their next matches!

-Jinzhen

Snooker qualifying day

A bleak and rainy day greeted the opening of the cue sports event of the 07/08 IHRG Recreational Games. Consisting of snooker and 4-ball, players and supporters alike gathered inside the frigid confines of the Nanyang House billiards room. However, the atmosphere was anything but chilly. Each game was preceded by heated discussion, occasionally even leading the event facilitators to “shh” the crowd.

Prelims

Snooker: 0 win, 3 loss
4-ball: 2 wins, 0 loss

Loser’s Bracket

Snooker: 1 win, 1 loss
4-ball: 2 wins, 0 loss

Runner-up Competition

Snooker: 0 win, 2 loss
4-Ball: 2 wins, 0 loss

The Hall 7 side consisted of (i) for snooker: Stanley Sim. Sario, Kang Jia Xi and Daniel; (ii) for 4-ball: Tam and Soen Chin Chun.

During the preliminaries, we were drawn against Hall 12. It was the toughest draw, being the only team that boasted IVP players. For snooker, Sario was up against the lone female player in the tournament. She rushed to an unassailable 16 point lead early in the game, eventually winning 73-26. It was essentially a one-woman show. Jia Xi and Stanley didn’t fare well either, going down tamely 35-38 and 29-41. For 4-ball, Hall 7 did much better, with Chin Chun and Tam wining both matches 52-40 and 78-66 respectively. Tam got off to a slow start, but later jumped to a 64-57 lead before winning the match.

In the second round, we were grouped into the loser’s bracket against Hall 8. There was less pressure on the players, as the opponents were less fancied. In snooker, Daniel was first up. He got off to a strong start with a 8-1 lead, but ran out of steam later in the game, letting his opponent catch up to 20 points before wrapping up with a 28-20 win. At the other table, Jia Xi was soundly defeated 33-99. Not all was lost, however. The 4-ball players managed to deliver the goods again; with Tam overcoming an initial 3-4 deficit to score a convincing 80-57 win. Chin Chun didn’t disappoint either, scoring the highest points at that point, with an impressive 107-48 thrashing of Hall 8.

With a much improved performance in the second round, we were booked for the third round, i.e. to determine the runner-up. Against Hall 14 this time, we had our confidence significantly bolstered by the earlier wins. However, things did not look up again. Daniel and Sario lost their snooker games 28-16 and 35-8 respectively. Sario did not stand a chance against his opponent who was potting very well. Once again, it was up to Tam and Chin Chun to salvage whatever shreds of confidence we had left. Chin Chun was lagging behind for most of the game, but managed to regain his form during the latter half of the game, reaching 61-64 at the penultimate cue. We looked to win, but our hopes were hanging on a thread. Sadly, it was a difficult pot, and the tables were not turned, so we had to content ourselves with a nail-biting finale which ended with our loss. At the other table, Tam continued his winning streak, gaining a 59-38 lead early on in the game, and finishing strongly with a 101-81 win.

Although we did not advance further, all the players are to be commended for their poise and sportsmanship. It was good practice though as our guys were able to hone their skills with one of the strongest hall in water polo. Though we lost the friendly, it definitely shed light as to where we stand and what to improve on.

The same senario was experienced over at the muggy and soggy soccer pitch as there was a mixed up in the timing of the kick-off which both Hall 7 and Hall 16 were unaware of. However, by a stock of luck, our guys were down early on the pitch for their training before the game and thus, we managed to qualify for the winners' play round. However, even though a 45 minutes grace was given to Hall 16, they did not manage to turn up with a complete team. Thus, Hall 7 was granted easy victory without even showcasing their skills. However, the Se7en's soccer team must feel honoured for it's the first time they had supporters cheering them on for what seemed like a usual training session.

GO GO SE7EN GUYS!

-Ling Hui

Hockey (F) 1st qualifying match

The Hall 7 girls' hockey team trounced Hall 1 on the way to an emphatic 6-0 victory on 13th December in their preliminary match. The encounter, which took place on a soggy pitch, was largely a one-way affair, as the opposition were seldom able to venture out of their own half.

With barely a minute of the match gone, Aneesa opened the scoring accounts for Hall 7 after intercepting a 15m hit. The girls kept the puck in their attacking half but several chances were missed - including a square pass which failed to connect, a long corner which was saved and a shot which was disallowed for an infringement. It did not take long for Hall 1's defence to yield again though, as Aneesa bagged a second goal. The girls took a 3-0 lead into the break when the opposing goalkeeper bundled Yi Ning's hit into her own goal.

It was more of the same in the second half, as Rain tapped the puck in from a scramble to extend the lead further. Hall 1's goalkeeper made a couple of saves but another blunder allowed Aneesa to complete her hat trick. The trailing side made a couple of forays in attack in search of a consolation, but never got close enough to trouble Hall 7's goalkeeper Za. Rain completed the rout with the final goal of the evening, a hit from close range.

Final score: Hall Seven 6, Hall One 0

-Nicholas Lim

basketball male 1st qualifying game

Team Se7en basketball males played against hall 12 in their very first qualifying game. It was all sweat and brawl as Se7en got their deserved victory. The rain came untimely and the game had to be postponed to half an hour later, but that did not stop our boys who are already experiencing their adrenalin rush and ready to crush their opponent.

Team Se7en started strongly, keeping possession within their court for most of the first half and crafted a comfortable lead. Thus, our team ended the first 2 quarters with the score of 13-3.

After the half-time prep talk, our basketball guys intended to come on stronger than before to kill the game quickly. However, their depleted energy allowed hall 12 to gain an upper hand in the start of the second half. Our opponent controlled the game and had more of the possession, however, they were unable to convert their chances. Team se7en capitalised on their mistakes and mistimed shots to continue leading the game. The team did not flash out fanciful skills but kept to the basics and won the game with the standard shots. Hall 12 had a few three point shots which allowed them to not suffer too huge a defeat and gave Se7en's supporters a few scares along the way.

However, Team Se7en knew victory was theirs and soon wrapped up the game with a score of 26-15, thus winning their first basketball males qualifying game.

-Toh Ling Hui

tennis game 1

Hall Se7en tennis team face hall six in their very first match this afternoon.

Hall Se7en managed to win only in the men's singles with a score of 6-0. It was definitely a good game played by Chun.

However, with many novice and inexperience players in the team as compared to hall six, team se7en was unable to win the remaining women's singles, men and women's doubles and mixed doubles. Thus, the game only lasted 30 minutes and we were able to kill off our opponent with relative ease.

The next game will be on 16 Dec and let's hope Team Se7en Sepak Takraw Team will emerge victorious once again!

-Toh Ling Hui

Se7en Othello Team

Intense atmosphere fills the competition hall. Each player knows that they have a duty to win for their Hall so that they can emerge champion for Othello.

Having won 2 games, Hall 7 could not qualify to enter the quaterfinals.

The first games starts at 1000hrs with Hall 7 vs Hall 6. For this game, our starting players are Adrian Chua, Yeo Wei An, Dexter Li, Leong Tze Hao and Soen Chin Chun. Reserve players are Alison June and Alicia Chia. Despite a fierce fight, our team lost to Hall 6 with a close score of 2:3.

In the 2nd game, Hall 7 meets the defending Othello champion, Hall 9. Although our players persevere throughout each match, displaying their sportsmanship, our team lost to Hall 9 with a score of 0:5.

In the 3rd game, Hall 7 lost to Hall 14 with a score of 1 1/2 : 3 1/2. Hall 7 beat hall 12 with a stunning victory of 4:1.

In the 4th game, our team won again with a score of 3:2.

In the 6th game, Hall 7 lost to Hall 3 with a score of 2:3.

In the last game, Hall 7 lost to Hall 8 with a score of 1:4.

Even though the Se7en Othello team did not emerge victorious, we would like to salute the team for putting their hearts out there on the playing board and in a display of wits and tactics, the Se7en Othello team will be winner in our hearts.

-Alicia Chia, Othello manager

Hockey (M) 1st qualifying match

Final score: Hall Seven 2, Hall Two 0

Hall 7 ran out as winners in their Group B qualifying match on 11 December. On a drizzly afternoon, the team beat Hall 2 by a score of 2-0 in a match which the victors dominated. Most of the action took place in our attacking half while the opponents failed to create chances for much of the game.

From the starting whistle our players surged forward and kept the puck in Hall 2's half, but they were unsuccessful in converting their opportunities. The opponents had to defend from several free hits and corners, and were lost in their passes, but they held on to keep the score goalless at the interval.

As Hall 2 started the second half, they misplaced a pass and were swiftly intercepted. With just the goalkeeper to beat, Imran pushed the puck into the goal to take the lead for Hall 7. The run of play remained the same as in the first half, and another poor pass from a long corner by the trailing side allowed Imran to bag a second goal.

Rain began to fall heavily as Hall 7 sought to kill off the game. Our players came close with a square pass in front of the goal which found nobody at the end. In one of their rare attacks towards the end of the match, Hall 2 nearly bagged a consolation with an angled drive, but goalkeeper Fahmi saved well to hold on to a clean sheet.

-Nicholas Lim

volleyball males qualifying match 1

Even though there was a delay in starting the match, Se7en volleyball males’ team kept their focus and was hell bent on winning. The first qualifying match started between hall 7 and hall 5. It was familiar faces as the team remained mostly intact from last year’s team. Thus, the teamwork and understanding can be said to be second to none. The team started with their traditional cheer and team rousing which proves to be a morale booster.

Even though this was a ‘customary’ match in which Se7en started as hot favourites, the team did not take things lightly nor undermine our opponent’s ability. Team Se7en started strongly and ended both sets in similar fashion as we beat Hall Five 26-6 and 25-8 respectively. Although Se7en volleyball males were leading all the way, the players did not stop to take a breather but instead played even harder to the loud cheers coming from fellow residents.

Once again, it’s job done and job well done and Se7en volleyball males’ team will train even harder and promise to come back even stronger for the next match. Let’s await their next victory on next Saturday, 22nd December where all eyes will be fixed upon how Se7en will overcome Hall 3 who is also one of the hot favourites to win this tournament.

Way to go, Team Se7en Volleyball Males...

-Toh Ling Hui

volleyball girls qualifying match 1

Se7en volleyball girls’ team kicked off their very first match with hall five.
