In softball, Hall 7 lost their first qualifying game against Hall 5 by a score of 8 runs to 2. The defeat left the team in need of winning their next two matches in order to advance to the next round.
Both teams and their supporters appeared upbeat in spite of the muddy field which greeted them on a Sunday afternoon. The first inning began with Hall 7 fielding first, giving them a theoretical advantage. That did not faze Hall 5 as they managed to eke out a 3-0 lead in the top half, taking advantage of some nervous fielding and batting, before Hall 7 rallied back with 2 runs of their own. The second inning was an even tighter affair, with neither team scoring any runs as players were forced and struck out with regularity, although Hall 7 produced some improved fielding.
There was still everything to play for in the third inning, but in spite of their best efforts, including an excellent flyout, Hall 7 were unable to prevent Hall 5 from scoring another 5 runs through a series of walks. Weak batting in their bottom half sealed the match, as Hall 7 could not find an answer. The inability to string a series of hits ensured that their batters who advanced were quickly put out of play and did not score any runs before the end of the game.
Final score: Hall Five 8, Hall Seven 2
